Radical Muslim cleric wins UK deportation case

LONDON (Reuters) - A radical Muslim cleric described as an "enormous risk" to UK security won a last-minute appeal on Monday against deportation to face terrorism charges in Jordan, in a blow to Britain which has being trying to remove him for a decade.

A senior judge at a special London court said there was a risk that evidence obtained using torture may be used against Abu Qatada and he may not receive a fair trial in Jordan.

The case of Qatada, a Jordanian cleric of Palestinian origin described by a Spanish judge as "Osama bin Laden's right-hand man in Europe", has been a thorn in the side of successive British governments.

Britain says videotapes of his sermons influenced Mohammed Atta, the ringleader of the September 11, 2001 attacks on the United States.

The court ruled there was a "real risk" that evidence obtained by torture from two other men by could be used against him in a Jordanian court.

The ruling, delivered at a special court that deals with security cases, said British interior minister Theresa May had been wrong not to revoke an earlier deportation ruling against Qatada, and allowed his appeal.

The decision is a setback for May and the Conservative-led administration, both keen to foster an image of competence and decisiveness on security issues.

The court was considering whether to grant bail to Qatada, who has been in and out of jail in Britain since his arrest in 2002, spending seven years in detention without charge.

Jordan has convicted him in his absence of sending encouragement to militants there who were planning two bomb attacks in 1999 and 2000.

May's department said in a statement it strongly disagreed with the ruling and would seek leave to appeal.

Robin Tam, a lawyer for the British government, told the court that Qatada "remains a man who poses an enormous risk to national security."

Britain had argued that a 2005 deal with Jordan and more recent diplomatic assurances would ensure that Qatada would obtain a fair trial there.

It had maintained that the agreements with Jordan were sufficient to overcome a ruling by the European Court of Human Rights that Qatada could not be deported because of the possibility that a trial there could use torture evidence.

Buffalo Bills v New England PatriotsGetty Images

Patriots running back Danny Woodhead had a 15-yard rushing touchdown and an 18-yard receiving touchdown Sunday against the Bills, and that has Tom Brady thankful to have Woodhead as a teammate. And thankful for the division rival that made Woodhead available.

Brady said on WEEI that he recognized Woodhead?s talent as soon as Woodhead arrived in New England, and he?s surprised that the Jets, Woodhead?s previous team, let him go.

?I remember his first game,? Brady said. ?We kind of joked on the sideline, [former Patriots offensive coordinator Bill O'Brien] and I, we kind of said, ?The legend is born.? We saw him that week in practice, what he was capable of doing, and said, ?Why did the Jets release that guy?? They had him playing receiver and he was a running back in college.?

In fairness to the Jets, the entire NFL overlooked Woodhead, which is why he went undrafted after twice winning the Harlon Hill Trophy as the best player in Division II college football. By signing Woodhead as an undrafted free agent, the Jets were showing that they had at least some faith in his ability to play in the NFL.

But the Jets never fully realized what Woodhead could do, which is why they released him after he had played in 11 games, ran the ball 15 times and caught eight passes. With the Patriots, Woodhead has a bigger role in the offense and is second on the team this year with 49 carries and fourth on the team with 23 catches. Brady is glad to have him.

?He?s just come in and done such a great job,? Brady said. ?He?s the ultimate team player and teammate ? dependable, consistent, you always know the level of play you?re getting from Danny. He had a huge game yesterday for us. We really needed it, because as an offense, I?d say everyone really didn?t have their best day but Danny. He really saved the day for us.?

The Jets, who were held to seven points, 11 first downs and 185 total yards while suffering their third consecutive loss on Sunday, could use a guy like that.

Entertainer Is Injured When She Trips and Falls Over A Pallet Left In A Passageway

A singer/ dancer/ performer aboard a cruise ship is injured aboard the vessel when some wooden pallets were left in a ? crew member only ? passageway outside a theater. She was walking in a poorly lit backstage passageway to a small space the entertainers were given to change their wardrobes. She trips and falls over the pallets, sustaining a serious back injury. The pallets has been left behind after the ships stores were stocked the morning before.

The Vessel Is Unseaworthy

There is no question the cruise line vessel owes the entertainer a warranty of seaworthiness. Here, the entertainer?s injuries were caused by the wooden pallets which became part of the ship when they were placed in the passageway. The fact that the wooden pallets were placed in the passageway, and left there without warning signs or rope created an unseaworthy condition in the passageway on the ship.

The wooden pallets should have been properly stowed or taken off the ship. The placement of the unstable and dangerous wooden pallets in the dark passageway made the vessel not reasonably fit for it?s purpose. Finally, the unseaworthy condition proximately caused her injuries.

Cruise Line ? Crew Members and Jones Act Seaman

All sorts of crew members aboard cruise ships are Jones Act Seaman. Which means they qualify for powerful Seaman?s rights and remedies. Including: cooks, bartenders, food servers, entertainers, hair stylists, engineers, AB?s and the vessel?s officers. The includes unseaworthiness ? which this case study concerns ? and Jones Act negligence and maintenance and cure.

In many instances, you will find it challenging to get the compensation you are entitled to from the cruise line. Instead, you may have to fight to get the compensation you are entitled to under the law.

China becomes worlds largest FDI recipient

Shanghai News.Net Wednesday 24th October, 2012

It's mainly due to a 39.2 percent fall in FDI flows to the US, compared to a three percent decline in China, said Zhan Xiaoning, director of UNCTAD Division on Investment and Enterprise, reported Xinhua.

However, early indications show that FDI flows to the US might be stronger in the second half of 2012, he said.

Zhan said China had claimed the world's top destination for FDI in 2003.

In the first six months of the year, China attracted $59.1 billion in FDI while the US attracted $57.4 billion, according to the latest Global Investment Trends Monitor.

As a result of the performance of the US and a decline of $23 billion in flows to BRIC countries, the global FDI stood at $668 billion, dropping by eight percent over the same period of 2011, said the report.

UNCTAD projects the FDI flows will, at best, level-off in 2012 at slightly below $1.6 trillion, according to the report.

Zhan said the slow and bumpy recovery of the global economy, weak global demand and elevated risks related to regulatory policy changes continue to reinforce the wait-and-see attitude of many transnational companies toward investment abroad.

CLEVELAND, Ohio (October 24, 2012)Hypnosis can help cut hot flashes by as much as 74%, shows a study supported by the National Center for Complementary and Alternative Medicine. This is the first controlled, randomized study of the technique to manage hot flashes, which affect as much as 80% of women who go through menopause. The study was published online this month in Menopause, the journal of the North American Menopause Society.

Controlled, randomized studies may pit an active drug against an inactive placebo pill. But it's hard to find a placebo for mind-body techniques. The researchers at the Mind-Body Medicine Research Laboratory at Baylor University, Waco, TX; the school of Nursing at Indiana University in Indianapolis, IN; and the College of Education at the University of Texas, Austin, met that challenge by randomly assigning the postmenopausal women volunteers to hypnotherapy or "structured attention," which is used as a control intervention with minimal effect.

The women who underwent hypnosis had five weekly sessions in which they received suggestions for mental images of coolness, a safe place, or relaxation, whatever their preference. They also got an audio recording of a hypnotic induction and were asked to practice it daily. The control group had five sessions in which a clinician provided discussion of their symptoms, attentive listening, interpersonal exchange, monitoring, measurement, and encouragement and avoided negative suggestions. The controls also got a recording that they were asked to listen to daily, but this one had information about hot flashes.

All the women kept diaries that tracked hot flash frequency and severity, and they also had hot flash frequency measured objectively by a skin conductance monitor. After 12 weeks, the women who underwent hypnosis reported 75% fewer hot flashes, compared with 13% fewer among the controls, and an 80% reduction in hot flash scores (a combination of frequency and severity), compared with 15% in controls. Skin conductance showed a 57% reduction in hot flashes for the women who underwent hypnosis, compared with 10% in the controls. The hypnosis participants also reported significantly less interference with their lives from hot flashes and better sleep than controls. Moreover, their level of satisfaction with the treatment was high.

How hypnosis eases hot flashes isn't clear. The authors of the study speculated that it may be because hypnosis may improve the function of the parasympathetic nervous system. This system is popularly called the "rest and digest" system, which puts the brakes on the sympathetic or "fight or flight" nervous system that controls body functions that ramp up during hot flashes, such as sweating and heart rate.

###

The study will be published in the March 2013 print edition of Menopause.

Founded in 1989, The North American Menopause Society (NAMS) is North America's leading nonprofit organization dedicated to promoting the health and quality of life of all women during midlife and beyond through an understanding of menopause and healthy aging.

Snipp Interactive's mobile marketing services expand in Mexico with ...

Pdf 10:59 am by Deborah Bacal

Mobile marketing firm () said today that its partner in Mexico has been chosen by telecom operator Telmex to create a marketing campaign for cell phone and tablet users. ??

Telmex is owned by Fortune 500 company America Movil, the largest telecommunications company in Mexico.?

The company owns around 90 per cent of the telephone lines in Mexico City and currently has revenue in of more than US$12 billion annually. ?It also provides communication services throughout Latin and South America. ?

The marketing campaign will use Snipp technology to create a contest for users to enter with their cell phones. ?

Snipp's ?Mobilize Me? platform supports several input mechanisms for mobilizing marketing campaigns for companies, including text message, QR codes, tags and Snapp tags.

Already, the business, which was established in 2007, has provided its services to several Fortune 500 companies and other major brands, advertising agencies and publishers, including Wal-Mart (), ESPN, Time Inc, Ford (), Nike (), Wendy's (NASDAQ:WEN) and Campbell Soup ().?

Back in May, Snipp inked a deal to license its Mobilize Me platform to digital marketing agency Virket S.A., providing mobile marketing services in the Mexican market together on an exclusive basis.?

The contest for Telmex will be an "augmented reality video game experience", Snipp said, complemented with Telmex branded and messaging.?

Users will be able to enter the contest through their cell phone by simply following instructions provided at all Telmex retail outlets and phone kiosks across Mexico City.?

The campaign is expected to launch in early December to tie into Christmas promotions offered by Telmex.

?We are very excited to launch our newest technology, an augmented reality solution, with Telmex," said Snipp CEO, Atul Sabharwal.

"This solution provides brands with a groundbreaking new technology that can engage customers by the one item they have with them at all times ? their cell phones or tablets.?

"Marketing in Mexico is focusing more and more on mobile solutions, as is the rest of the world, and expect to capture significant market share as evidenced by our ability to win business from a big established player like Telmex. ?

Indeed, the partnership with VirKet has proved lucrative for Snipp, as earlier this month, they announced a deal with Mexican yellow pages publisher, ?Secci?n Amarilla, to develop mobile solutions exclusively for Secci?n Amarilla clients.

CEO of VirKet, Pedro Quinza?os Cancino, added: "This [Telmex] campaign puts us on the cutting edge of mobile marketing technology in Mexico with Snipp.?

"We continue to effectively merge offline and online marketing solutions together across a range of industries in Mexico and see our business and interest in mobile solutions growing at a fast pace.??

The two companies are also aiming to provide their mobile solutions to Sanborns, the retail arm that oversees 180 Sanborns Stores, 90 Stores, 60 Mixup Stores, 30 iShop Stores and 3 Fifth Avenue Stores in Mexico.?

In addition, the parties are working on deploying a range of mobile-enabled business models for the Mexican market in 2013-14 for various clients.

Memoto camera to record life with two pictures every minute, shared through Android app

Android Central

It looks like the next big thing has hit Kickstarter, and it's called Memoto. This tiny little 5 megapixel camera clips to your clothes, automatically takes pictures, geotags them, and once plugged into your computer over microUSB, uploads to the cloud for storage (provided you have a subscription plan with Memoto). There isn't a single button on the camera because it automatically starts shooting as soon as you start wearing it.

The picture quality isn't particularly great, but Memoto is aiming for sheer volume. We're talking two per minute for two days straight on a single charge. Luckily, the Android and web app will help organize everything into batches of shots and splice the moments into time-lapse videos. Sharing can be open or private, with selective visibility.

Levy Library: Celebrate Open Access Week with the Levy Library

Open Access Week is October 22-28, and to celebrate we?re highlighting some of the Open Access (OA) resources available through the Levy Library. Open Access is a new publishing model, where authors pay a fee when they submit to the journal and then accepted articles are published freely on the web.? Why publish Open Access?? Some studies have suggested that OA articles get cited more than equivalent traditionally published articles.? Check here for an open access article examining open access citation trends.?

Did you know that Mount Sinai is a BioMed Central supporting member?? This gives Mount Sinai authors at least a 15% discount on the article processing charge when publishing in any of BioMed Central's 212 journals, including, for example, BMC Medical Education, Genome Biology, BMC Medicine, BMC Systems Biology, Critical Care and Molecular Neurodegeneration.? And Mount Sinai authors are taking advantage of this membership - take a look at some of our recent publications.?

At the Levy Library we want you to have the access to as many resources as possible, so we list Open Access journals and publishers in our linking software.? That way, when you do research you?ll be linked directly to OA articles just like standard ones so that your research goes smoothly.? The library links to BioMed Central articles, the PLOS group of journals, hybrid and new OA journals from publishers like Elsevier, PubMed Central and the Directory of Open Access Journals, eLife and other OA resources such as the Wellcome Images, and many more.? Questions or comments?? As always, let us know at Ask A Librarian.
