It is quite easy! Yes, I am talking about actual physical gold and silver, not ?paper? gold, or certificates, or paper promises.
Question:?Why gold and silver in an IRA?
Answer:?The simplest explanation is that gold and silver will protect your purchasing power. There are many other reasons including safety in the event of another economic melt-down such as what happened in 2008.
Question:?Why not buy ETFs (Exchange Traded Funds) that invest in gold and silver, such as GLD, SLV, PSLV, and PHYS?
Answer:?You certainly can. They are more convenient to buy and sell, and the annual fees are less. But, if you are looking for maximum safety, purchase metals in your IRA and have them stored in a secure, insured, private vault.
Question:?Why can?t I store them in my personal safe deposit box instead of a private vault?
Answer:?Per the IRS code, you can?t take delivery until you pay taxes. Don?t fight the IRS.
Question:?How do I open an account?
Answer:?Find a self-directed IRA custodian who will allow precious metals in your account, complete the paperwork, send it and the initial fee to the IRA custodian, and they will open the account.
Question:?How do I find a self-directed IRA custodian?
Answer:?Go to your favorite metals dealer ? there are many ? and look at their recommendations. My preference is Apmex.com but there are many fine choices for metals dealers, and they can recommend IRA custodians. Apmex currently suggests seven?IRA custodians?on their website.
Question:?Once I get the account, how do I fund the account?
Answer:?You can fund it with a non-taxable (partial or total) roll-over from an existing IRA, 401k, or 403(b) account, or by contributions under the current IRA rules.
Question:?Then what?
Answer:?The IRA is open, the money arrives from the rollover or contributions, and the IRA custodian asks you what you want to purchase with the funds and what dealer (such as Apmex) you wish to use. You tell the dealer what combination of silver and gold coins and bars (there are a few restrictions regarding what coins and bars are acceptable in IRAs) that you wish to purchase.
Question:?Then what?
Answer:?The metals are purchased and shipped to a bonded, insured, private storage facility in Delaware (or wherever) and stored. They are not in a bank. The IRA custodian sends periodic statements showing transactions and estimated fair market value of your gold and silver holdings.
Question:?What does this cost?
Answer:?It depends on the custodian, the size of your IRA, and the storage facility. Assume $200 ? $400 per year as an estimate.
Question:?Why so much?
Answer:?Fees, IRS regulations, accounting, profit, and expenses. Gold and silver have increased 15% to 20% per year for the past decade. How has your money market account performed in that time? How have your brokerage accounts and mutual funds performed in that time??Did you feel safe or vulnerable during the crash of 2008??Would you feel safer if your IRA funds were not held in the banking or financial system? After considering these questions, the fees may seem quite reasonable. If not, then stay with what has been working for you.
Conclusion
An IRA that invests in physical gold and silver is NOT for everyone, but it may be appropriate for a portion of your retirement funds. It will probably be safer in the event of another financial meltdown, but it will be more expensive than a traditional IRA, and it is less convenient and flexible. Choose what works for you.

Obama suggests Romney is out of touch with America
MIAMI (AP) ? President Barack Obama cast Mitt Romney on Thursday as an out-of-touch challenger for the White House and an advocate of education cuts that could cause teacher strikes to spread from Chicago to other cities. The Republican countered that the U.S. economy "is bumping along the bottom" under the current administration and he predicted victory in the fall.
The two men eyed each other across hotly contested Florida, a state with 29 electoral votes, more than any other battleground in the close race for the White House.
"When you express an attitude that half the country considers itself victims, that somehow they want to be dependent on government, my thinking is maybe you haven't gotten around a lot," the president said. That was in response to a question about Romney's recent observation that 47 percent of Americans pay no income tax and believe they are victims and entitled to an array of federal benefits.
Obama spoke at a town hall-style forum aired by the Spanish-language television network Univision.
For his part, Romney was eager to move past that controversy, which has knocked him off stride. He disclosed plans for a three-day bus tour early next week through Ohio with running mate Paul Ryan and sought to return the campaign focus to the economic issues that have dominated the race all year.
At a fundraiser in Sarasota, Fla., Romney looked ahead to his televised head-to-head encounters with Obama this fall. "He's a very eloquent speaker, and so I'm sure in the debates, as last time ... he'll be very eloquent in describing his vision," the Republican said. "But he can't win by his words, because his record speaks so loudly in our ears. What he has done in the last four years is establish an economy that's bumping along the bottom."
Less than seven weeks before Election Day, polls make the race a close one, likely to be settled in eight or so swing states where neither man has a solid edge. Obama has gained ground in polls in some of those states since the completion of the Democratic National Convention two weeks ago, while Romney has struggled with controversies of his own making that have left Republicans frustrated at his performance as a candidate.
Still, there were fresh signs of weakness in the nation's job market as the two candidates vied for support in Florida.
The Labor Department said the number of Americans seeking unemployment fell only slightly last week, to a seasonally adjusted level of 382,000, suggesting that businesses remain reluctant to add to their payrolls. The four-week average rose for the fifth straight week to the highest level in nearly three months.
After more than two days of struggle, Romney seemed eager to leave the 47 percent controversy behind as he appeared at the Univision forum Wednesday night. "'My campaign is about the 100 percent in America," he said firmly.
But Obama made his most extensive comments to date on the subject since the emergence of a video showing Romney telling donors last May that as a candidate his job wasn't to worry about 47 percent of the country.
"Their problem is not they're not working hard enough or they don't want to work or they're being taxed too little or they just want to loaf around and gather government checks," the president said."
"Are there people that abuse the system? Yes, both at the bottom and at the top," he added, including millionaires who he said pay no income taxes. He said many at the low end of the income scale pay other forms of taxes, and some who don't pay taxes are senior citizens, students, disabled, veterans or soldiers who are stationed overseas.
"Americans work hard, and if they are not working right now I promise you they want to go to work," he said.
As for education, the president said Romney and running mate Ryan advocate a budget that would cut federal funds for schools by about 20 percent.
"And you could see potentially even more teachers being laid off, working conditions for teachers becoming even worse and potentially for more strikes," he said.
The president added that under his administration, "what we say to school districts all across the country is we will provide you with more help as long as you're being accountable, and as far as teachers go, I think they work as hard as anybody, but we also want to make sure that they are having high standards of performance in math and science."
Among other changes, Republicans favor repealing a 2010 change in the program that made the federal government the direct lender for student loans, replacing private banks. Democrats say a decrease in administrative fees made more money available for loans, while Republicans argue the change has raised the government's debt.
Money was not a significant issue in the Chicago strike. Mayor Rahm Emanuel secured an extension of the school day and empowered principals to hire the teachers they want. Teachers were able to soften a new evaluation process and win some job protections.
Obama, who ran on a message of changing the partisan tone in Washington, told the Univision audience that he had come to the conclusion that "you can't change Washington from the inside. You can only change it from the outside." He went on to say that what he had accomplished since taking office was due to mobilizing "the American people to speak out."
Romney seized on the remarks to say that Obama had surrendered in the face of a broken Washington and major challenges. "I can change Washington. I will change Washington," he told supporters in Florida. "We'll get the job done from the inside ? Republicans and Democrats will come together. He can't do it. His slogan was 'Yes, we can.' His slogan now is 'No, I can't.' This is time for a new president."
The day's campaign events showed the complexities of campaigning in Florida, a state that is home to large populations of seniors and of Hispanics.
Romney released a new television commercial designed to appeal to both groups.
It features Sen. Marco Rubio plugging the Republicans' plan to overhaul Medicare, a flashpoint in the campaign that Obama says could threaten future beneficiaries with high out-of-pocket costs.
Saying his mother is 81, Rubio declares in the ad: "We can save Medicare without changing hers, but only if younger Americans accept that our Medicare will be different than our parents', when we retire in 30 years.
"But after all they did for us, isn't that the least we can do?"
While Obama is likely to win the Hispanic vote overwhelmingly, he drew criticism in his appearance.
He said the lack of immigration reform legislation was his biggest failure as president and "not for a lack of trying or desire." He said he couldn't find a single Republican to help work on the legislation. "I'm happy to take responsibility for being naive here," the president said when pressed to admit he broke his promise.
Univision anchor Jorge Ramos interjected: "You promised us, and a promise is a promise. And with all due respect, you didn't keep that promise."
Obama drew praise from Hispanic groups earlier in the year when he announced a policy shift that will allow some immigrants brought to the United States illegally as children to avoid deportation.
Romney has been critical of the change, but has declined to say if he would reverse it if he wins the White House.
In a report filed with the Federal Election Commission, the challenger's campaign said that as of Aug. 31, it had about $50 million available to spend in the final two months of the race. It also reported a bank debt of $15 million, of which officials say $4 million has been repaid.

LONDON (AP) -Stoke defender Andy Wilkinson will serve a three-match ban after admitting a charge of violent conduct for elbowing Manchester City striker Mario Balotelli in the face during a Premier League match.
The incident took place during Saturday's 1-1 draw at the Britannia Stadium but was missed by the referee. The Football Association took retrospective action after the elbowing was caught on video.
Wilkinson will now miss Stoke's match at Premier League leader Chelsea on Saturday, as well as games against Swansea and Liverpool.

Billy Gillispie resigns, likely ending his head coaching career
In the two years between his abrupt firing at Kentucky and his celebrated arrival at Texas Tech, Billy Gillispie was always one of the most intriguing coaches on the market.
A DUI and a high-profile flameout in Lexington certainly had damaged his stock, yet fan bases clamored for their schools to hire him as a result of the remarkable turnarounds he'd previously engineered at long-struggling UTEP and Texas A&M.
Unemployment won't be nearly as kind to Gillispie this time because the way he wasted his second chance.
Gillispie officially "resigned" Thursday evening citing "medical reasons," a hollow face-saving gesture that does little to obscure the real truth. Yes, the high blood pressure and stress-related ailments Gillispie has battled the past few weeks are scary, but the reality is he was almost certainly going to be fired even if he had been healthy enough to coach.
What ended Gillispie's tenure at Texas Tech ? and maybe his career as a Division I head coach ? were allegations he forced injured players to practice, bullied players and staffers and generally created an unhealthy climate inside the program.
First,?current players?expressed concerns during a meeting with athletic director Kirby Hocutt. Then came reports that?Gillispie's behavior had led 15 players to transfer during his 18-month Texas Tech tenure and numerous other basketball staffers to leave as well. And finally, his best returning player, Jordan Tolbert, told ESPN.com last week that he too would leave the program if Gillispie were invited back.
Viewed through a narrow prism, these incidents might not prevent a risk-taking athletic director intent on making a splash from giving a contrite Gillispie another chance someday. Combine his disastrous Texas Tech tenure with his other transgressions, however, and it's pretty clear that a guy who five years ago was the most coveted coach on the market is now completely unemployable.
The players Gillispie recruited at Kentucky often turned out to be nowhere close to good enough for the SEC. Worse yet, stories of Gillispie's abrasive personality and borderline-abusive tactics?are rampant from his abrupt two-year tenure in Lexington.
Gillispie once got so angry at Josh Harrellson he forced the center to spend halftime of a game at Vanderbilt in a bathroom stall and then had him ride more than 200 miles home in the back of the equipment van. He also allegedly kicked star Jodie Meeks off the team at halftime of a 2009 NIT game against Notre Dame. And most seriously, he?allegedly pressured Derrick Jasper into returning too soon from microfracture surgery, an injury from which the talented guard never fully recovered.
Texas Tech took a chance on Gillispie in spite of those stories because school officials believed he'd learned from his mistakes and he would be a better fit in football-crazed Lubbock than a basketball fish bowl like Lexington. Instead his tenure with the Red Raiders lasted a mere one season during which Gillispie won just one Big 12 game in part because the players he inherited from previous coach Pat Knight weren't good enough to be competitive.
Associate head coach Chris Walker will take control of the Texas Tech program on an interim basis, giving the Red Raiders a year to find the appropriate candidate to lift them out of this mess. Meanwhile, Gillispie will have plenty of free time to get healthy and to ponder his murky future.
Five years ago, he was a coach on the rise ready to ascend to the peak of his profession. Two years ago, he was a risky but intriguing option for a program seeking to rebuild. And now, between fighting personal problems and crashing and burning at his last two jobs, he's virtually untouchable and unlikely to resurface as a Division I head coach again.

Birth is no reason to go to hospital, review suggests
ScienceDaily (Sep. 19, 2012) ? A new Cochrane Review concludes that all countries should consider establishing proper home birth services. They should also provide low-risk pregnant women with information enabling them to make an informed choice. The review has been prepared by senior researcher, statistician Ole Olsen, the Research Unit for General Practice, University of Copenhagen, and midwifery lecturer PhD Jette Aaroe Clausen.
In many countries it is believed that the safest option for all women is to give birth in hospital. However, observational studies of increasingly better quality and in different settings suggest that planned home birth in many places can be as safe as planned hospital birth and with less intervention and fewer complications.
"If home birth is going be an attractive and safe option for most pregnant women, it has to be an integrated part of the health care system," Ole Olsen says and adds, "In several Danish regions the home birth service has been very well organized for several years. This is not the case everywhere in the world."
The updated Cochrane Review concludes that there is no strong evidence from experimental studies (randomized trials) to favor either planned hospital birth or planned home birth for low-risk pregnant women. At least not as long as the planned home birth is assisted by an experienced midwife with collaborative medical back up in case transfer should be necessary.
Fewer interventions in home birth
Routines and easy access to medical interventions may increase the risk of unnecessary interventions in birth explaining why women who give birth at home have a higher likelihood for a spontaneous labour. There are 20-60 per cent fewer interventions, for example fewer cesarean sections, epidurals and augmentation among those women who plan a homebirth; and 10-30 per cent fewer complications, for example post partum bleeding and severe perineal tears.
"Patience is important if women want to avoid interference and give birth spontaneously," says Jette Aaroe Clausen. "At home the temptation to make unnecessary interventions is reduced. The woman avoids for example routine electronic monitoring that may easily lead to further interventions in birth."
Jette Aaroe Clausen adds that interventions in childbirth are common in many countries, but also that there is a growing concern internationally because interventions may lead to iatrogenic effects; iatrogenic effects meaning unintended consequences of the intervention. Routine electronic monitoring may for example lead to more women having artificial rupture of membranes which in turn can lead to more interventions.
Evidence and human rights
While the scientific evidence from observational studies has been growing, the European Court of Human Rights in Strasbourg in the case Ternovszky versus Hungary has handed down a judgment stating that "the right to respect for private life includes the right to choose the circumstances of birth." This is quoted in the review.
Thus the conclusions of the review are based on human rights and ethics as well as on results from the best available scientific studies.
