IDC: Android topped tablet share in Q1 at 57 percent, Apple led manufacturers
We were expecting a changing of the guard among tablets given the rise of several competitors throughout in 2012, and we've seen just that in IDC's market share estimates for the first quarter of 2013. The research firm shows Android having almost reversed the share it held a year ago, claiming the top spot at 56.5 percent; Apple's huge spike in year-over-year iPad sales wasn't enough to keep it from dipping to 39.6 percent. Microsoft's estimated performance tells a more complex story, however. Its second quarter of Windows 8 and RT sales involved a big year-to-year jump as well, but it was also starting largely from scratch -- the combined Windows platform was still tiny at 3.7 percent.
The pecking order remained mostly the same among individual manufacturers, although the charts here explain just why OS share shifted so much in the winter. While Apple remained comfortably in front with its 39.6 percent, just about every rival made a dent: Samsung, ASUS, Amazon and Microsoft all gained at least a small amount, even if no one manufacturer posed a major threat. IDC is providing shipping numbers that don't necessarily reflect the on-the-ground sales, especially when everyone beyond Apple declines to report official numbers, but they suggest that tablets like the Nexus 7 and Surface Pro have found at least a small audience.

Realtor Discovers Explosives Inside Nashville ... - AOL Real Estate
Twenty to 25 homes in a Nashville, Tenn., neighborhood were evacuated after a Realtor who was prepping a home on the market for a viewing reportedly had quite a shock. The real estate agent discovered explosives in the crawl space of the home on Catspaw Court, according to Nashville TV station WSMV reported. According to the TV station, the devices were determined to be pipe bombs and a bomb squad was called in to remove the explosives. Another local TV station, WTVF, said authorities believed the devices were simulators, but WSMV reported that police later determined that they were hazardous.
Police reportedly kept surrounding neighbors out of their homes for five hours on Sunday night while authorities removed the explosives and concluded their on-scene investigation. Residents weren't allowed to return to their homes until 12:30 a.m. Monday morning, WSMV reported. The identity of the Realtor who found the explosives was not disclosed. WSMV reported that a person who had inspected the home just a month ago saw the devices but did not report them to police because that person didn't think there was a threat to public safety.
A similar stir occurred in 2011 when an irate Seattle homeowner facing eviction reportedly "booby-trapped" a home that was in foreclosure. Though in that incident, no actual explosives were found connected to the apparent tripwire. For other scary and odd discoveries in homes, see the gallery below.

Facebook's mobile business expands in first quarter

(Reuters) - Facebook Inc's mobile advertising business continued to expand in the first three months of the year, but the social network's rising spending restrained profit growth.
Shares of Facebook were up 11 cents at $27.54 in after-hours trading on Wednesday.
Mobile ad revenue, which accounted for 30 percent of Facebook's ad revenue in the first quarter, was at the higher end of the range analysts expected, said Macquarie Research analyst Ben Schachter. But he said, "it needed to be higher for people to get really excited about trend lines."
Facebook's advertising revenue growth, which slowed sharply last year, has regained some momentum as the company has pushed more ads to users on mobile devices such as smartphones and tablets. In the fourth quarter, mobile ads accounted for roughly 23 percent of Facebook's revenue.
The world's largest social network said it now counts 1.11 billion monthly active users and about 665 million daily active users.
The company said the number of monthly users who logged on solely through mobile devices more than doubled to 189 million users from a year ago.
The company has rolled out a string of big product launches and revamps in recent months, including an overhaul of its newsfeed and search feature, as well an app for Android smartphones that puts Facebook features front and center on phone homescreens.
The various initiatives have contributed to rising spending, with Facebook's 60 percent year-on-year increase in costs and expenses outpacing the 38 percent revenue increase.
Facebook said it earned $219 million, or 9 cents a share, in the first three months of the year, compared to $205 million, or 9 cents a share, in the year-ago period.
Excluding certain items, Facebook said it earned 12 cents a share. Analysts polled by Thomson Reuters I/B/E/S were looking for adjusted EPS of 13 cents.
Facebook's revenue in the first quarter totaled $1.46 billion, versus $1.06 billion in the year-ago period, and roughly in line with analyst expectations. Advertising revenue was up 43 percent in the first quarter, the fastest growth rate since the end of 2011.

Obama vows again to close prison at Guantanamo Bay

WASHINGTON (AP) ? President Barack Obama on Tuesday renewed his pledge to close the prison for terrorist suspects at Guantanamo Bay, Cuba, but the impediments that have thwarted him thus far remain.
At a White House news conference, Obama said he would try to persuade Congress to end restrictions that have prevented him from closing the facility. The president's comments followed the arrival Monday of medical reinforcements at the U.S. naval prison to help deal with a hunger strike by about 100 of the 166 detainees there. The forced feeding of detainees has refocused human rights concerns on the issue.
"I don't want these individuals to die," Obama told reporters.
He added that the situation was "not sustainable" and that he had asked advisers to review it. He also said he would press the issue with lawmakers.
"I'm going to re-engage with Congress to try to make the case that this is not something that's in the best interest of the American people," he said.
Obama first vowed to close the prison while campaigning for president ahead of his 2008 election. But after Congress passed restrictions on the transfer of detainees to the United States and other countries, the president largely abandoned the issue.
Obama has transferred many prisoners from Guantanamo to other countries and has called for moving the remaining detainees to maximum security facilities in the United States.
But the lawmakers, mostly Republican, who blocked Obama's push to close the facility in his first term remain no less committed to keeping it open and there is no public clamor to do so. Lawmakers opposing the closure have express concern about security and have argued that the rules of civilian courts are not appropriate for terrorism prosecutions.
Despite Obama's pledge to make another run at closing Guantanamo, the president was vague about how broad an effort he planned. And it was unclear how much political capital he was willing to spend on the vexing issue, particularly if it distracts from other second term priorities like overhauling immigration laws or seeking a "grand bargain" deficit-reduction deal.
A renewed push to close the detention center would cheer liberals who long have been frustrated over Obama's failure to make good on his promise to shutter Guantanamo. However, Obama hasn't had the full support of his party on this issue, with some Democrats joining Republicans in blocking efforts to transfer detainees to U.S. prisons.
Obama's push also comes just weeks the April 15 bombings in Boston that killed three people and injured hundreds more. In the aftermath, some lawmakers have called for trying the surviving bombing suspect as an enemy combatant like the Guantanamo detainees, despite his American citizenship.
Human rights organizations welcomed Obama's renewed call to close the facility but urged him to do more right away. Amnesty International said Obama has not transferred some detainees that he could even under congressional restrictions.
"It's time to do more than talk," Zeke Johnson, director of Amnesty International USA's Security with Human Rights Campaign. He said Obama should show he is serious by appointing a high-level official to focus on closing the facility.
The focus has turned back on conditions at the facility because of the hunger strike that began in February by detainees who have spent years in Guantanamo without trial and seemingly without hope of a resolution from Washington. At his news conference, Obama acknowledged their situation.
"The idea that we would still maintain forever a group of individuals who have not been tried, that is contrary to who we are," he said. "It is contrary to our interests, and it needs to stop."

Heavy snow belts Rockies and Plains; Texas city to see 67-degree temperature drop

A blast of cold air being dragged southward by a dip in the jet stream threatened the Rockies, Plains and parts of the Midwest with spring snowfalls this week that meteorologists said could be ?historic.?
Nearly two feet of snow is forecast for the mountains of Colorado and Wyoming, where heavy snow started falling Tuesday. Several inches could also fall by the end of the week in a band from Texas to Wisconsin, according to the National Weather Service.
Some portions of the Plains and upper Midwest regions, including Wisconsin and sections of Minnesota, could see a flurry of wet snow on Wednesday night into Thursday, Weather.com reported. A light early May dusting may even be seen as far south as the Texas Panhandle and western Oklahoma.
Cheyenne, Wyo., had already received more than 6 inches of snow early Wednesday morning, Weather.com reported.
With the jet stream bowing to the south, cold air is being sucked deep into the country, bringing temperature changes that may seem downright cruel to many, according to meteorologists at weather.com.
Amarillo, Texas, is the perfect example. On Tuesday it hit a high of 97 degrees.
?By tomorrow morning we have ? Amarillo at 30 and probably snowing,? Weather Channel meteorologist Kevin Roth said. ?So in Amarillo we?re projecting a 67-degree drop from Tuesday afternoon to Thursday morning ? so summer to winter.?
Minneapolis, Kansas City and Des Moines, Iowa, have been basking in the 70s and 80s. They?ll be lucky to see 40 through the end of the week, weather.com said. And Chicago just had its first 80-degree day of the season. It should have another on Wednesday before highs drop to the 50s and low 60s through the weekend.
The heaviest snowfall will be along the Front Range of the Rockies, with an area from central Colorado to southeastern Wyoming under winter storm warnings that call for up to 20 inches of fresh snow through Wednesday night. Just to the east, cities in the foothills, including Denver, could see five to eight inches of accumulation during the period, and roads could become icy and snow-packed, the weather service said.
Further east, where the cold air meets the warm, severe thunderstorms are likely Wednesday in parts of Kansas, Oklahoma and Texas, according to weather.com, which adds that the threat diminishes Thursday, with ?marginally severe? storms possible in parts of Texas and southern Louisiana.
Travel disruptions could come with the worst parts of the storm, with Interstates 25 and 80 between Wyoming and Colorado in line for possible snow and ice, Roth said. But as of Wednesday morning, FlightAware.com listed only 16 canceled flights in the region, all at Denver International Airport.
?That will probably go up during the day,? Roth said.
While the storm may set some snow records, May is often a fickle month. Heavy snow is fairly rare, but temperatures in different parts of North America can range radically, Roth said.
Montreal, Quebec, and Ottawa, Ontario, for example, will be 30 to 40 degrees warmer on Thursday than normally toasty Oklahoma City, he said.
Cheyenne, Wyo., which hit 70 degrees Tuesday afternoon, was on the verge Wednesday of breaking its May snowfall record of 14 inches, Roth said.
?Cheyenne had eight inches as of midnight their time, and it?s been snowing steadily since that,? he said. ?We think they?re going to end up with a good 12 to 18. ? Welcome to May, right??

How a GOP Focus on Minorities Could Pay Off
It may seem contrarian, but Republicans could be well-served by focusing on winning over African-Americans with an aspirational agenda that includes education reform, economic growth and faith-based initiatives.?
In fact, a new Associated Press analysis, which reports record-high turnout among blacks along with lagging white turnout in the 2012 presidential election, underlines the point.
The study suggests that the historic nature of President Obama?s candidacy raised African-American turnout to historic levels that aren?t likely to be replicated.?If a future Republican nominee got merely 10 percent of the black vote, with lower turnout levels, swing states like Ohio, Florida, Virginia and perhaps even Pennsylvania could flip.?A more relatable nominee may also increase turnout among working-class whites.
Latinos, despite their growing numbers, still lag behind in turnout, and immigration reform is one way to focus on that piece of the puzzle.?But policy items like education reform, which may appeal to a broader population of minority voters, could be a productive ticket for Republicans and should not be ignored.
