Westboro Baptist Church Protest: Sabotaged By Zombies!

In awesome news, a Westboro Baptist Church protest was overshadowed Friday as a horde of "zombies" arrived to counter the radical group's efforts.

Demonstrators dressed as the undead swarmed a DuPont, Wash. military base that the infamous Kansas-based church was in the process of picketing.

After hearing that Westboro planned ta protest at Joint Base Lewis-McChord, south of Seattle, 27-year-old Melissa Neace decided to mobilize her own.

"We wanted to turn something negative around, into something people could laugh at and poke fun at," Neace said. Mission accomplished ...

She called her Facebook group, Zombie'ing Westboro Baptist Church AWAY from Fort Lewis, "the easiest way to divert attention from something so hateful."

About 300 counter-protesters showed up in varying degrees of zombie garb, far outnumbering the visibly overwhelmed picketers from Westboro.

"I think that their message is very hateful, and Jesus was not a hateful person. He loved everybody," one of the counter-protesters told KIRO.

While it is unclear why Westboro Baptist Church targeted the DuPont military base for its latest effort, the group frequently pickets military funerals.

The group, whose protests are legal under the First Amendment, believes war deaths are God's punishment for America's tolerance of homosexuality.

Because they can't legally be removed from the premises, counter-protests like the DuPont zombies took part in are becoming increasingly popular.

Earlier this month, thousands of people in red shirts formed a "human wall" around a fallen soldier's funeral to block the anti-gay protesters.

Heart Gallery helps unite kids with forever families - Area Wide ...

The Oregon County Division of Family and Social Services showcased children in need of families during the statewide Heart Gallery campaign. Professionally taken photos of children, in need of forever families, were put on display at the Glass Sword Cinema and Alton Florist.

Missouri's Heart Gallery project began in 2006. It is a unique way to shine a light on the children in foster care who are waiting for adoption. The portraits and fun descriptions of the children reveal their interests and individuality. The Heart Gallery has helped over 180 children in Missouri find their forever families. There are currently 1,400 children in Missouri that are in foster care, and in need of loving, stable homes.

Oregon County Caseworker, Jessica Campbell, and her supervisor, Denise Young, were on hand to tell The South Missourian News more about the traveling gallery that showcases children in need of adoption.

"This is our traveling Heart Gallery, so we move it from circuit to circuit," said Campbell.

Young added, "It was at the Glass Sword Cinema and then at the Alton Florist. It travels all over the state of Missouri. The kids are from across the state. There are a few that are in our area. These are just kids that are up for adoption and looking for families."

Along with the photos, a basket is placed for people interested in adopting one of the children, to leave their name and number.

"One of our case workers will call and talk to them and set up their license and training," said Young. Classes must be attended by those interested in adoption and those willing to become foster parents.

Young stated, "We are always looking for foster parents in our area. Even with adoption, they have to attend the foster parent training."

Campbell also added more about the requirements for those interested in getting involved, "After the foster parent training, we have specialized adoption classes they must follow up with. The first step is making the call to get on the registry, and we can get them set up." Campbell was able to remember two children in the area that have been adopted as a result of the Heart Gallery.

Sincerely wanting a loving home for the children, Young said, "We have a lot of kids out there that just need homes." "The Heart Gallery also reminds us that it is not just babies that are in need of forever homes, they are all ages," said Campbell.

The Missouri Heart Gallery is a joint effort between the Missouri Department of Social Services and the Adoption Exchange-Missouri Office. The Adoption Exchange was established in 1983 and has been assisting children with special needs be adopted. The Adoption Exchange program has helped more than 5,500 children find devoted families.

Army leaders look at force's mental and physical health - Medical Tips

A top Army general said the military remains focused on meeting the physical and mental health needs of soldiers and families, including providing additional behavioral health programs. /ppAfter touring Fort Riley in northeast Kansas, Gen. Lloyd Austin said Friday that leaders were focused on putting services and support structures in place to build resilience in a force that has been at war for more than a decade. /ppAustin and other top Army officials spent the week touring Army posts in Georgia, North Carolina and Texas to review programs that include suicide prevention, care of wounded soldiers, prevention of sexual assault and evaluation of disabilities. /ppThe Armys behavioral health services have come under question after incidents in Iraq, Afghanistan and Fort Hood, Texas, in which soldiers have been charged with killing fellow soldiers and civilians. Austin said, however, that any reviews initiated in response to those incidents were outside his current survey. /ppAustin discussed the suicide rate among soldiers, saying reducing it would require continued efforts by Army behavioral health professionals and community resources./ppSuicide is the toughest enemy Ive faced. It is an enemy because we are losing soldiers to this fight, Austin said. /ppAustin said that the war in Afghanistan was the Armys mission but that maintaining the health of the force mentally and physically was as important./ppThis is absolutely central to the readiness of our Army, not only with respect to the current fight, but the next fight, he said. /ppAt Fort Riley, Austin visited with post and 1st Infantry Division leaders about what is being done to meet the health care needs of 18,000 soldiers and their families assigned to the Kansas post. The divisions headquarters and one brigade are deployed over the next year to Afghanistan. /ppThe general said part of the purpose of touring the posts was to figure out how Army headquarters can eliminate friction points by changing policies or providing additional resources. /ppLt. Gen. Patricia Horoho, surgeon general of the Army, said the number of behavioral health providers has increased by 83 percent since 2007. She said the Army is placing behavioral health services in each brigade and integrating it in primary care services for soldiers and families.

Arkansas man sentenced to death in officer's killing

PARAGOULD, Ark. (AP) ? An Arkansas man who shot a police officer during a traffic stop last year, then coldly shot him in the face while he was pleading for his life, was sentenced to death on Saturday.

Jerry Lard was convicted Thursday of capital murder, and a Greene County judge agreed with the jury that the 38-year-old should die for killing Trumann police officer Jonathan Schmidt in April 2011.

Lard's attorney, Katherine Streett, said the case will be automatically appealed and that she doesn't comment on ongoing cases.

Prosecutor Scott Ellington, in a statement, said seeking the death sentence always involves a lot of thought and prayer, but that he saw no other option in the case of Lard, who also fired on but missed Schmidt's partner, Sgt. Corey Overstreet, during the confrontation.

"The jury echoed the commitment of the community to protect those who protect us. I am very proud of their courage and fortitude. I know it wasn't an easy decision, but it is one that had to be made," Ellington said.

Lard's attorneys didn't deny that he killed Schmidt, who left behind a wife and children, but they say Lard was mentally ill or deficient and should be spared execution.

Overstreet testified that he showed up as backup last year after Schmidt pulled over a car in which Lard was a passenger.

At one point, Schmidt asked Lard his name and birthday and radioed the information back. Schmidt walked to Lard's side of the car.

"When he opened the door, a hand reached out and started shooting Jonathan," Overstreet said.

Overstreet went to reach for his gun, but he said Lard pointed his weapon at him, so he scrambled between the vehicles. He heard gunshots.

Video taken the night of the shooting from dashboard cameras in the police cars showed Schmidt helping Overstreet back onto his feet after he fell, The Jonesboro Sun reported.

Lard swore and shot at Schmidt, who said, "Please, don't shoot me again."

A medical examiner told the jury Schmidt was shot four times, in the chin, neck, right wrist and chest, though a protective vest blocked that shot.

Lard becomes the 38th death row inmate in Arkansas. The state hasn't been carrying out executions because the Arkansas Supreme Court struck down its lethal injection law earlier this year.

Johnson, Palin and more join 'DWTS: All-Stars'

Getty Images (2), AP

Bristol Palin, Shawn Johnson and Joey Fatone are all competing again on "DWTS."

By Ree Hines

It?s only been two months since wide-receiver-turned-hoofer Donald Driver claimed the coveted mirror ball trophy on ?Dancing With the Stars,? bringing a glittering end to the last season of the ballroom bash. But even though it hasn?t been a big wait, the anticipation for the upcoming season has been huge.

That?s because season 15 isn?t just another round of the same old show. It?s ?Dancing?s? long-awaited all-star season -- the one fans have hoping for and speculating about for ages.

Now that speculation is over. On Friday the returning competitors were revealed.

The ballroom alums soon set to take the dance floor again are:

  • Shawn Johnson
  • Bristol Palin
  • Pamela Anderson
  • Apolo Anton Ohno
  • Joey Fatone
  • Kelly Monaco
  • Gilles Marini
  • Emmitt Smith
  • Drew Lachey
  • Kirstie Alley
  • Helio Castroneves
  • Melissa Rycroft

But that?s not all! While those 12 celebs make up most of the official all-star cast, there?s one more returning soft shoe set to join them. Who?ll take spot No. 13? That?s up to ballroom fans. In a first-of-its-type twist for the show, ?Dancing? viewers are being asked to vote for the past participate of their choosing to fill the final spot. The choices include Sabrina Bryan, Carson Kressley or Kyle Massey.

Details on that twist are still to come on the official ?Dancing With the Stars? website.

Though partners have not yet been announced, executive producer Conrad Green told reporters at the Television Critics Association summer press tour on Friday that the pros will be revealed on Aug. 13. But don't expect that all the stars will get the same pro they had before.

"Obviously, when you look at the stars that are coming back, it's impossible for everybody to have the same partner, so we're currently working that out," Green said. "We're trying to pair people based upon what we think is going to make the most intriguing season and make a brilliant season."

Green also explained how the producers chose this particular group to do "All Stars." "We took the view we wanted to do the best of the best. We wanted to represent many different seasons," he said. "For us, this is almost our version of 'The Avengers.' These were the superheroes of their particular seasons, and they're back."?

Though the cast will be familiar, don't expect the show to be exactly the same. Green teased that there will be some tweaks to the ballroom bash this season. For starters, he noted that the judges will likely have to be recalibrated a bit, "otherwise, we'll be starting with 9s and 10s right out of the box." He also hinted that the show might introduce a few new things to update the competition.

The season premieres Sept. 24 at 8 p.m. on ABC. And for those of you who can't wait to see at least one these returning hopefuls on your small screen, keep your eye out for Shawn at the Olympics, where she's acting as TODAY.com's special correspondent.?

Poop Strong: Cancer patient whose costs exceeded insurance cap ...

Arijit, 31, is graduate student in Arizona who was diagnosed about a year and a half ago with stage IV colon cancer. He endured multiple surgeries, and grueling rounds of chemotherapy. Then, in February, 2012, the cost of his treatment exceeded the lifetime limit on his graduate student health plan, which is managed by Aetna. His coverage was terminated. His cancer was not.

He launched what we cancer patients sometimes refer to as an internet lemonade stand: a site called Poop Strong (a light-hearted parody of "Livestrong"). At poopstrong.org, he invited well-wishers to make a donation or buy schwag, with all proceeds going to his healthcare.

But, big news today, as his pal Kirk Caron tells Boing Boing,

In the six months between when he was dropped and when he'll be picked up by another student health plan, he's been looking at well over $100K in medical bills for his treatments. In addition to updates about his own condition and the state of Poop Strong, Arijit's been tweeting (naturally) about the state of health insurance, and recently, Aetna got involved. The conversation (as Twitter convos tend to do) sort of spirals out from the main thread between Arijit and Aetna.

That's an understatement! Arjit ended up debating directly with the CEO of Aetna, Mark Bertolini. The tl;dr: Aetna, and Mr. Bertolini, agreed in the end to cover the full extent of bills that accrued since Arjit was dropped from insurance (about $118,000).

"The system is broken," said Bertolini. "I really am trying to fix it."

Arjit is redirecting all of the donations he received the University of Arizona Cancer Center Patient Assistance Fund and The Wellness Community (Arizona), to directly assist other people with cancer who cannot pay for the life-saving medical treatments they need.

I spoke with Arjit today, and will be publishing a transcript/audio of our conversation soon. He's a really cool guy, and he has some insights from this experience that I think everyone should hear. It looks like Arjit is covered, for now, but the system is still broken. The debate over health care costs has become a political football?but for people like me and Arjit and everyone else in America who isn't in the 1%, health care costs are literally a matter of life and death. No one should suffer or die because they can't afford medical treatment. It really is that simple.

Arjit's friend Jen Wang created a Storify of the twitter exchange between Arjit, Aetna's PR reps, and Aetna's CEO. You can read this below.

Tips On How To Efficiently Improve Your House |

Many people feel home improvement projects are always difficult to complete, but many of these projects may be simpler than you think, if you know what you are doing. As is the case with anything, having the correct information and advice makes a home improvement task easier. Your next home improvement project will benefit from the advice in this article.

Is your residence drafty? Consider using one of the new products that use air to insulate your space. Yes, they actually use air! It works the same way bubble wrap functions in packaging. Air is sent into plastic chambers that are placed into ceilings and walls. This is a cost effective way to re-insulate a drafty home.

Adding texture to your walls with a mix of drywall mud will create an interesting look as well as mask any blemishes. It is quite easy to do. Once the drywall mud is troweled, you simply grab a brush with bristles, a sponge or an empty plastic bag, and then use whatever you grab to create texture on the drywall mud by dabbing.

TIP! Before starting any project, you must have a good idea of the changes you will be making. All improvement jobs require a well formed plan to ensure completion on time without going over the available budget.

For a home improvement that offers an outstanding return, replace your outdated entry door with a steel front door. Recent studies have shown that people that put in a steel door will get back 129 percent of the cost when they sell their home. Steel doors are attractive and potential buyers like their looks. If that isn?t enough benefit, they also improve a home?s energy efficiency.

Think about adding coordinated metal fixtures to bathrooms to make them look more modern without spending too much. It is possible to find a wide range of shower curtain rods, cabinetry pulls and towel racks to suit almost any taste. Many retailers offer such fixtures in packages with coordinating patterns and colors which can all be in place within a few hours of starting this simple improvement project.

Adding big value to your home can be accomplished with even the smallest of improvements. If you want to sell the home, think about making a few small changes. For instance, paint your house, both inside and out. Something as simple as this, which costs you only one or two hundred dollars, can increase the value by nearly one thousand dollars!

Think about upgrading your central heating and air system if it?s older than seven years. Replacing central air and heat can reduce the consumption of electricity by as much as 20 percent. These newer models are also quieter and more functional.

To create more space on your nightstand, choose floor lamps instead of table lamps. The floor lamps can be moved to different areas of the room because they are free standing. Select a lamp that has an attractive design that fits your style.

As previously discussed, many home improvement projects can be simplified with good advice. IF you know how to go about the project it will be simpler to complete. Take advantage of the tips in this article so that you can complete home improvement tasks smoothly

If you are renovating a bathroom, keep handicapped people in mind when you are redesigning the space. Although you may not need your bathroom to be handicap-friendly now, if you stay in the home when you get older, you may need it to be. When you go to sell your house, doing things things can help you command a much higher price.

Olympic Athletes Feel the Hurt

olympics, summer olympics, winter olympics, injuries Image: Flickr/Singapore 2010 Youth Olympic Games

Most sports involve some level of physical risk, and Olympic contests are no exception. Although the injury rate is lower than that for some professional sports such as American football and soccer, about 10 percent of Olympians get hurt during their days at the games, either while training on site or in actual competition.

A total of 1,055 injuries were reported during the 2008 Summer Games in Beijing, according to a thorough study of injury reports by Lars Engebretsen of the University of Oslo in Norway. The insults ranged from fractured feet, dislocated shoulders and ruptured Achilles tendons to less traumatic but more prevalent ankle sprains and head contusions.

Of course, the circumstances that inflicted pain varied considerably. Engebretsen found that the fraction of injuries that took place during training was highest in table tennis, tennis, swimming, gymnastics, beach volleyball, equestrian, modern pentathlon and athletics. Injuries most often occurred during competition in boxing (no surprise), water polo, hockey, handball, weight lifting, baseball and judo.

Although we tend to think of collisions and falls as likely culprits, overuse of an athlete's muscles or joints caused more than 40 percent of the injuries in rowing, modern pentathlon, sailing, shooting, tennis, beach volleyball, triathlon, athletics, weight lifting, swimming and badminton. Contact with another athlete did cause more than half the injuries in boxing, judo, water polo, handball, taekwondo, wrestling and soccer.

Severity varied, too, of course. Fractures were highest among taekwondo injuries (4.8 percent). The same sport also had the highest rate of dislocations or ruptures to tendons and ligaments (3.2 percent).

The Winter Olympics have fewer athletes overall, so fewer injuries were reported during the 2010 Games in Vancouver: 287. But the injury rate was 11.2 percent, a little higher than the 9.6 percent for the summer games.

The distribution of injuries varied much more widely among winter sports, too. In short-track speed skating, 28 percent of men were hurt but only 9 percent of women were. In snowboard cross, however, which involves frequent contact between boarders in a free-for-all downhill race, only 11 percent of male racers were hurt but an incredible 73 percent of female athletes were. Oddly, a surprisingly high proportion of injuries occurred during training runs, when a boarder was alone on a course, without competitors to raise the stakes. The high rate may just have been the result of fast slopes, according to Engebretsen.

Legs and arms and everything in between were compromised during the past two Olympics. But hockey players suffered by far the most facial damage, caused by flying pucks, swinging sticks and the occasional fight. Downhill skiers and snowboarders had the most head injuries. Concussions affected 7 percent of all winter athletes?twice as high as in the summer games.

Engebretsen will see how the statistics hold up in 2012. He is at the London Games, and he will be studying rates of illness as well.

Advantages Of Training On An Artificial Field

all weather sports surfaces, once relegated solely to the dreams of big-league stadium landscapers, have become more prevalent in recent years. Nowadays, minor league clubs, colleges and even some high schools install them. Upon closer examination, the reasons become abundantly clear.

An artificial field bears many advantages that make them obvious come game day, but the major unsung advantages of manufactured turf lie in its training benefits. Sure, it's nice to know that the fans can always look forward to a clean field when they come out to cheer you on. It's also great to know that you won't have to spend nearly as much on your maintenance budget after those same supporters decide that your home-game performance was worth a field-rushing congratulatory celebration. In reality, the best things you can get out of your artificial field are its abilities to improve your training sessions.

The Importance of Practice

Everything relies on your training. Each catch, kick and driving rush towards the goal is a direct result of how well your team trained. Although the players gripe and complain, they all know that the only reason they can make those amazing plays on game day is because they spent hour after hour going over them beforehand. The fans that bring in revenue may simply be there for the excitement of watching their favorite players, but they'll only continue to support you as long as you keep performing well. If you want to win, you train.

Training the Right Way

So if the secret to winning is training, then what's the secret to proper training? Surprisingly, your ability to drill your players and ensure that they remain in top physical condition is only a part of the required necessities.

Training must be consistent. Artificial turf ensures that it is. While some people tout the benefits of working under adverse conditions, these methods can only get you so far. In reality, top players are born because they stick to a schedule and actively work with the results. If your field is always ready for the same drills and play patterns, you ensure that your players can isolate themselves as the only changing factor in the equation.

Sure, it's great to train in tough weather and triumph, but what these sessions yield players in self-confidence, they sacrifice in terms of trackable results. You can't ever hope to gauge a players performance and improvement accurately if you have to factor major changes like day-to-day field conditions into your estimations. Such issues can make it impossible to maintain a consistent training program that an entire organization can follow. When the turf is in the same condition day after day, however, players gain the benefit of uninterrupted training that hones their skills and adds valuable experience.

All weather sports surfaces make it easier for coaching and training staff to balance the entire equation. Even better, they reduce the number of accidents that put stars out of commission all too often. All weather sports surfaces and artificial fields help players normalize their performance, helping them focus on the things they need to improve instead of on the things that are working against them.

What Is On Your Relationship Checklist? | - Black Love and Marriage

Post image for What Is On Your Relationship Checklist?

What should be on your relationship (or love) checklist?

Philosophers, clinicians, researchers, and theologians have all had their say about what love is and what love isn?t.

People are quick to throw all all sorts of terms and theories when they are feeling ?warm and fuzzy? or need a rationale for why they did not do what they are supposed to do in their intimate relationships.

As a marriage, family, and sexuality therapist and educator, I?ve noticed that many of my clients either do not have a relationship/love checklist or if they have one, they allow their boundaries to become blurred when they begin to have amorous feelings.

Here are a few ?relationship/love? tips you should consider before entering into your next romantic encounter:

1. Be happy with yourself and be ready to be in a relationship.

There are three essential components to being happy and ready to be in a relationship:

A. Identify what you need to be happy with yourself.
B. Identify what you may need to do to enable your partner to be happy.
C. Identify what your expectations are of being in a relationship.

Being ?ready? to be in a relationship means that you are physically, emotionally, intimately, and spiritually open to sharing who you are with someone else.

Likewise, you also need to be receptive to who you partner is and where he/she is at across all four of those dimensions. Many people want to be in love or in a relationship but most people either aren?t ready, or ready to have a partner who is ready.

2. Never forget how special you are.

If your partner minimizes, negates or judges you as a person, or your actions, you may want to proceed with extreme caution?or not at all. Sometimes we fall in love with people at the expense of forgetting/neglecting who we are. Instead, it?s important to be with someone who doesn?t prevent us from remembering and honoring those traits that allow us to be the special individuals that we were put on this Earth to be.

3. Take your time.

Too often when couples begin relationships, they don?t take enough time getting to know one another across different contexts. People behave differently in front of their peers, their families, and their co-workers, and it is important to have an understanding of how they interact with the different people in their different circles.

Moreover, people behave differently over time. The way that a person treats his/her parents today may be significantly different from the way that he/she may have interacted with his/her parents growing up. One of your relationship tasks is to allow the relationship to move slowly enough to learn who you are really are giving your heart to.

Mobile users upgrading to smartphones at record rates, and choosing Android

2 hrs.

New numbers from ComScore show that users of feature phones are upgrading to smartphones?at record rates, and are overwhelmingly choosing Android for their new platform.

In April,?2011, just over 60 percent of feature?phone users chose to stay with a feature phone when they got a new one. In April of this year, that number is down to 50 percent; meanwhile, the proportion of?users choosing to upgrade to smartphones has gone from 38% percent?to 47.5 percent in the same period. It's the tipping point for smartphone adoption: it's very likely that within a few months, smartphone upgraders will outnumber feature?phone keepers.

Android is the platform of choice for these new users, according to ComScore's numbers: 61.5 percent of new smartphone users in April chose Android, while a significant but still much smaller 25.2 percent picked up?an iPhone. Meanwhile, 7.1 percent went with Microsoft and just 4.8 percent with BlackBerry.

This is likely due to the fact that Android phones are present on every carrier, often for free. Many people are simply?looking to get GPS and email on their phones, but are?not particularly interested in the premium features of more expensive Android models or the iPhone 4S. A cheap Android-based phone may not excite enthusiasts who keep up with the latest hardware, but as a free complement to a new carrier contract, it appears to be very compelling to customers.

The study comes on the heels of another by Nielsen concluding that two-thirds of all phones bought in the U.S. are smartphones. Now it appears that the remaining third, which was the subject of the ComScore's research, is going to be shrinking even faster than before.
